Communication With God Part Five

If you need to review the first four messages on Communication With
God (since I sent them over a month ago), they can be viewed at:

I am snowed in! Here in East Tennessee it used to snow all the time,
and people could deal with it. But now it doesn't snow all the time, and
there are a lot more people crammed into one area than there used to
be. I am a victim of technology and growing up in the 80s and 90s.
The power outages have really caused us all to adapt a lot. Our
university has been closed since Tuesday afternoon and will not open
up again until Monday. Some of you are sitting there thinking that one
foot of snow is nothing. But I remind you we have these things called
hills and mountains here in Tennessee. They make things complicated
even in dry weather. And others of you are sitting there saying, what is
snow? If you live in Florida and California, I wish I could say I would be
your neighbor soon so I could have sunshine most of the time.
I keep telling God that beach ministry is for me. I just need to head to
Florida or California and set up a church right at the beach. We could
have praise music every night and play volleyball in the daytime.
(Remember that I'm snowed in, and I am bored, and I have a
reaaaallllllyyyyy BIG iMaGiNaTiOn!) God keeps gently reminding me of
all the things He has for me to do here and that I need to be content
where I'm at.
So how can I communicate with God when there's no electricity and
the phone lines are down? Well, it's really cool. I don't have to have
all that technology to communicate with Him. (However, getting
devotions by email does help me grow closer to God.) My friends and I
are learning to adapt.
One of my friends and I are leading each other in Bible studies. One
thing I've learned is that for every thing we take in about God, we must
do something to counteract it. One book I read says there are many
"spiritually obese" people in our churches. I agree. Every time I talk to
God, I wind up having to do something, having to think, or refocus, or
something like that.
After we had done some Bible study and sung praise songs, we ran
into a friend who needed some help moving some stuff. We also
helped some people in the parking lot. But our friend's mom was there,
also. Once we got done, she treated us all to dinner. We sat there
and talked about God. And we weren't all even the same
denomination. We had a Southern Baptist, two United Methodists,
and a Disciple of Christ. And I recall hanging out with the folks from
Campus Crusade for Christ this morning though I go to the Baptist
Student ministries.
Each of us who believe in Christ has His spirit living inside of us. Thus,
we can hear God speaking to us through those around us even if they
don't believe every little detail the same as us. And as we hear God
speak to us, we will be challenged or have a lot to think about and be
thankful for.
God is not limited by the effects of s snowstorm. We can find Him in
any circumstance if we look for Him. It would be easy to go stir crazy
and get totally bored (which I am so closed to being), but God is with us
and we should praise Him and see what He has to say.
You may not be snowed in right now, but you may find problems in life
"snowing you in". Or you may just be falling into a ritual with your daily
time with God. We can always look for ways to communicate with God
other than what we normally do. He is BIGGER than our whole
universe so we shouldn't limit Him in the ways He can speak to us. He
created us to praise and worship Him. We should not allow the
circumstances of weather or just life in general be a barrier between us
and God.
