Discovering My Need
By Gerald Sumeracki
I thought myself so very smart
I'd learned all life could teach
I pranced upon my living stage
My heart quite out of reach.
Yet, somehow, with only me
Fulfillment as to self
Would never come to be, I knew
I needed someone's help.
The years sped by and God and I
Drifted each our ways
It never dawned upon my brain
That I was in a maze.
But then one day not long ago
I read the Holy Book
It made me think beyond myself
At life I'd take a look.
I gazed around and far beyond
The limits of my eyes
I saw an ugly world of sin
And heard the Master's sighs.
"Be good to one another"
His words were loud and clear
"Love each as I have loved you all
"And do not have a fear."
"The evil one is out to kill
"His score of souls is high
"But words I taught will keep you fast
"Against the King of Lies."
"Remenber just these simple rules
"I ask you ere live by
"Love God and neighbor as yourself
"And thereby never die."
So all the world's great pleasures
All things in which we stock
Yes all the things that mankind seeks
Can be a stumbling block.
Without the Truth and Love made ours
His death brought you and me
Our selfish time upon this earth
Could never set us free.
For only through the Living Way
Can man complete his task
And realize that joy is won
Through Christ, to Him hold fast.
