The Woman at the Well
By Gerald Sumeracki
The day had been "well spent" they said,
"Your preaching stirred our hearts,
"But now it's time we looked for bread,
"Before our journey starts."
So Christ did send them to a town,
To find some food to eat,
Not far from where He sat to rest,
His head and weary feet.
A woman of the town came near,
Samaritan by birth,
To draw a pall of water pure,
She sang in merry mirth.
Twas by their well where Christ did rest,
A well blest from the past,
Where water flowed to quench and clean,
All those whose pail was cast.
"Give Me a drink!"said Christ to her,
As from their well she drew,
"For I do thirst and need to drink,
"Mind not that I'm a Jew."
"Why ask me thus?" she asked in shock,
"To thus give you a drink,
"The likes of us you hate I know,
"Best leave our well I think."
The Lord did tell her of her life,
Things hidden until now,
"How do you know me as you do?"
She asked not knowing how.
"I am Messiah" said the Lord,
"This water that I ask,
"Is not the water I shall give,
"To all those who but ask."
"A water flowing for all time,
"A water that will last,
"Until the end of time for man,
"To this you should hold fast."
"You have no pail to draw see I,
"So how do you propose,
"To find this special water pure,"
As from her knees she rose.
The Lord revealed Himself as God,
To this Samaritan lass,
She ran away to spread the news,
Christ's followers she did pass.
His followers did wonder why,
To her he spoke alone,
She was a woman of the night,
From her He should have flown.
But Christ told them He came to give,
Eternal life and Love,
To all who asked that God forgive,
He grants from grace above.
The woman's word went through the town,
And all, came they to see,
"Messiah now we all have seen,
"When we do look to thee."
"This woman's word was hard to hear,
"But now we know full well,
"That You with whom we now do speak,
"Will save us from sin's Hell."
