The Last Supper
By Gerald Sumeracki
They sat around that wood hewn bench,
All twelve of them and He,
To celebrate Christ's special meal,
And hear of heaven's key.
The Lord had told them of the need,
To meet this day to supp,
And celebrate what God had wrought,
With bread and wine to cup.
They all did know the reason why,
All Jews would soon break bread,
To honor God for saving them,
From Egypt they were led.
But somehow something new was felt,
As Jesus talked and preached,
They all did sense His sadness deep,
As He began to teach.
He told them one would sell His life,
He told them He would die,
He told them that He loved them all,
They knew He did not lie.
He passed a loaf among them,
Saying, "This my body be,"
"And when you eat in years to come,"
"Remember always me."
He passed a cup of common wine,
And said it was His Life,
And if all would remember this,
They'd bare the world of strife.
He told them that they'd understand,
The lesson taught that day,
When all was done and He was gone,
And in the ground He lay.
Betrayal talk and words of death,
Were beyond their eyes to see,
Until they saw what ere He meant,
As hung He on that tree.
